A Message from our Principal

Winter 2017

Dear Friends of St. Michael Academy,

What a vibrant community our school is!

Now that I am fully ensconced in my role of principal, I see even more clearly what I had discovered about our school when I first arrived – that SMA is a FAMILY in every sense of the word!

Dr. Christopher HamptonA family of life-long learners. SMA’s academic rigor sets the tone for our students, who understand the import of their intellectual growth and work hard in all subject areas. Our classes are small enough that individualized attention can be given to each student, and our faculty are passionate about teaching and seasoned in their educational techniques. Our students are challenged but supported each step of the way, and their achievements, test scores, and honors give credence to this dedication. Education does not stop in the classroom, however, as these students are motivated to grow in music, the arts, and athletics as well. Whether team building through a volleyball or soccer victory, tenacious rehearsals for a musical production, or creating imitations of Cassatt and Degas in art class, our SMA students will tell you they are motivated to “go for the gusto” and challenge themselves in all aspects of their education.

A family of community servants. Our students take service to an exceptional level. Unconcerned with fulfilling requirements, they seek to live the Gospel’s message of helping others. Service opportunities within our school are plentiful – Trees For Americas Troops, Toys for Tots, and Catholic Charities, among many others. What is astounding, however, is what our students do outside our school walls each day, where they can be seen volunteering at Gracie’s Kitchen, the local homeless shelter, or reading to patients at the Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Quite simply, a St. Michael student is one who goes above and beyond for those in need.

What is astounding, however, is what our students do outside our school walls each day.”
A family of faithful and spiritual pilgrims. A fundamental aspect of our faith is our belief in “status viatoris.” In other words, we are all in the state of “being on the way,” learning and growing in all aspects of spirituality. At SMA, opportunities abound for reflection, prayer, and faith development. The entire school gathers daily for Morning Prayer, an all-community assembly with reflections, announcements, and inspirational messages. In addition, each grade is responsible for coordinating weekly Mass on Wednesdays, where students choose prayers and readings for their particular day and are responsible for greeting the community and facilitating all aspects of the service. This obligation not only builds their spiritual foundation, but hones their public speaking and leadership skills as well. Finally, the study of Religion and Matters of Faith is part of the formal curriculum for every class. Students learn the history and theology of religious traditions guiding their quests for eternal happiness and fulfillment in this life and the next.

I am honored to be part of our St. Michael family, one in which all members are honored, supported, and challenged to become the human beings God intended them to be. Our school’s mission statement says it all:

“Guided by Catholic beliefs, St. Michael Academy provides a Christ-centered environment laying the foundation for exceptional academic and moral life-long learning.”

We live what we teach and are proud to share our community with you. So take a closer look at our website, or better yet, stop by for a visit. Our family will greet you warmly and make you feel part of our wonderful school.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Christopher Kennedy Hampton, Ed.D
